UP Tacloban hosts Lambo Kalibungan: The 10th Annual International Conference on Environmental Science

UP Tacloban, through the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, hosted the 10th Annual Conference on Environmental Science (ACES 2022) on 26-27 May 2022 via Zoom with a distinguished lineup of speakers and more than 158 local and international participants from the Philippines, Hongkong, France, and Australia.
With the theme “Lambo Kalibungan: Anchoring Ecosystem Restoration to the Local Ecological, Cultural, and Socio-Economic Environments,” the conference focused on the 7th and 8th principles of the United Nations General Assembly resolution declaring 2021-2030 as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which state that “ecosystem restoration is based on well-defined short-, medium- and long-term ecological, cultural and socio-economic objectives and goals” and “ecosystem restoration is tailored to the local ecological, cultural and socio- economic contexts, while considering the larger landscape or seascape.” ‘Lambo kalibungan’ is a phrase in Bisaya that means flourishing of the environment.
Jean-Philippe Salcedo, né Schwab, the UN Environment Programme’s Partnership Coordinator for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, delivered the keynote address entitled “Decade to launch a global #GenerationRestoration movement.” His talk highlighted the importance of coming together and taking action in scaling up ecosystem restoration efforts for the benefit of present and future generations.
There were five plenary sessions. Dr. Nathaniel C. Bantayan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension of UP Los Baños (UPLB), and Dr. Dindo M. Campilan, Regional Director for Asia of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) were the speakers for session A on “Land use and forest ecosystem restoration in the context of sustainable human society.” National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Academician Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera, NAST President Dr. Rhodora V. Azanza, and UP Marine Science Institute (MSI) retired professor Dr. Miguel D. Fortes were the speakers for session B on “Local perceptions and attitudes towards the blue carbon ecosystems: the key towards successful ecosystem restoration efforts.”
The speakers for session C on “Governance and social context for marine ecosystem restoration, drawing on cases from coral reef restoration and mangroves” were Prof. Dr. Michael Fabinyi of the School of Communication, University of Technology Sydney; NAST Academician and UP MSI professor Dr. Marie Antonette Juinio-Meñez; and Prof. Dr. Lawrence M. Liao of the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life, School of Applied Biological Sciences, Hiroshima University. And for session D on “Policy and governance in relation to natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development” the speakers were Prof. Dr. Wolfram H. Dressler of the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Melbourne, Prof. Dr. Rodelio F. Subade of the UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences, and Asst. Prof. Jessica Dator-Bercilla of the UP Visayas Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies.
A special session on the state of environmental science in the Philippines and mainstreaming environmental science education and research was led by Professor Maria Victoria O. Espaldon of the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Dr. Ben S. Malayang III, Professor Emeritus at Silliman University.
The conference also included over 30 oral presentations, 23 poster presentations, and seven student speed talk presentations on blue carbon ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems, aquatic (fisheries) ecosystems, and environmental policy and governance.
The paper entitled “An investigation on the microplastic contamination of Oreochromis niloticus present in Laguna de Bay”, which was presented by Mr. Edmar John S. Caporal, Mr. Cris Lloyd E. Cawaling, Ms. Ariana Micaela M. de Guzman, Mr. Robert Timothy S. Reyes, Mr. Lester John T. Tambalo, and Ms. Zandra T. Salut from Our Lady of Fatima University, Quezon City Campus, won the Cherry Ringor Best Student Oral Presentation Award. Meanwhile, the poster presentation entitled “Comparison of the rate of photosynthesis (ET50 values) of Avicennia and Rhizophora using floating leaf discs assays” by Mr. Lenz Irvin Ayon, Ms. Paula Mikhaila P. Pabello, and Prof. Leni Yap-Dejeto from UP Visayas Tacloban College bagged the Charles Peyraube Award for Best Poster.
ACES 2022 was co-organized with the UP Los Baños School of Environmental Science and Management, Philippine Environmental Science Association, and student organization UP Envisage-The Environmental Science Society of UP Tacloban.

UP Los Baños Chancellor Jose Camacho, Jr. and UPLB’s Ad Hoc Committee for the Proposed BS Accountancy program visited UP Tacloban on 31 May 2022 to discuss the proposed adoption of courses from the BS Accountancy program offered by UP Tacloban and the UP Visayas College of Management.
With Chancellor Camacho were the Ad Hoc Committee chair and chair of UPLB’s Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (DAME) Asst. Prof. Mar Cruz, College of Economics and Management Associate Dean Asst. Prof. Arlene Gutierrez, and members of the Ad Hoc Committee Asst. Prof. Juan Paulino Trespalacio, UPLB Internal Control Officer Joan Mendoza, UPLB Accounting Office Chief Marie Claire Raymundo, and UPLB Cashier’s Office Chief Elizabeth Eala.
UP Tacloban Dean Patricia Arinto was joined at the meeting with Chancellor Camacho and the UPLB Ad Hoc Committee by Associate Dean Asst. Prof. Arvin De Veyra, College Secretary Asst. Prof. Irma Tan, and BS Accountancy faculty Asst. Prof. Anida Bernadette Lorenzo. Also at the meeting were UP Tacloban faculty who are alumni of UPLB — Asst. Prof. Flordeliz Dacuyan of the BS Management program, Ugnayan ng Pahinungod Coordinator and BS (Economics) faculty Asst. Prof. Hector Grama, and BS (Economics) faculty Mr. Gerwyn Enerlan.
On 3 June 2022 UP Visayas Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Harold Monteclaro visited UP Tacloban together with the UPV Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) Director Assoc. Prof. Reynold Tan and the TTBDO staff. They met with Prof. Leni Yap-Dejeto and her research team in the DOST-funded Extraction and Utilization of Mussel Glycogen project to discuss the commercialization of the project’s products. This was followed by a meeting with Dean Arinto, Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics chairperson Prof. John Paul Yusiong, Leyte Samar Heritage Center director Asst. Prof. Antonino De Veyra, and UP Tacloban faculty and staff who are implementing externally-funded research projects.

The 2022 UP Tacloban Harangdón Awardees

The Harangdón Awards are UP Tacloban’s Excellence Awards. Instituted in 2021, during the College’s 48th founding anniversary, this annual award celebrates exemplary members of the UP Tacloban community whose work adheres to the University’s standards of excellence and public service, contributes to institutional growth and development, and brings honor to the College and the University as a whole. The award name ‘Harangdón’ is a Waray word meaning ‘worthy of respect and emulation.’

UP Tacloban Health Services Unit participates in a mobile blood donation at Samar National School, Catbalogan City

The UPVTC Health Services Unit on 12 March 2022 participated in a mobile blood donation drive conducted at the Samar National School, in Catbalogan City. This activity was a joint endeavor of the HSU, PRC- Leyte and Western Samar Chapters as well as the Red Cross Youth – Western Samar Chapter.
Representatives from various government and non-government organizations such as the Catbalogan Law Enforcement Authority Unit (CLEU), 87th Battalion of the Philippine Army, 523rd Naval Squadron Reserve, Philippine Coast Guard, and JCI Catbalogan Balud participated in the said activity.
We would like to thank the 63 blood heroes ‘who gave their blood to save lives’.
